Outreach

I’m passionate about making science accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages. From primary school classrooms to sold-out comedy festivals, I love sharing the wonder of plant ecology and evolutionary biology with the broader community.

Public Speaking & Events

I’ve been fortunate to present my research in some wonderfully unconventional venues. I’ve spoken at two sold-out shows during the Sydney Comedy Festival (May 2023) at Enmore and Factory Theatres, discussing plant invasions in an entertaining format. I also opened a debate on “AI will destroy the world” at VIVID Sydney (June 2024) at the NSW Parliament Legislative Chamber, where we won the crowd’s vote.

Other public engagement highlights include presenting at the Pint of Science Festival (May 2023) and Future Science Talks Sydney (November 2022), where I shared my research on invasive species ecology with pub audiences, and participating in the #BatteryLow Livestream during Sydney Science Festival (August 2020), which reached over 500 viewers.

School Engagement

Working directly with students is incredibly rewarding. I’ve served as keynote speaker and judge for the Combined Schools Science Initiative at Kambala College (September 2025), where I shared my journey to becoming a scientist with Grade 6 students. I’ve also led hands-on incursions at La Perouse Primary School (June 2024) and Our Lady of Fatima Primary School (November 2023), exploring native vegetation and plant adaptations with Year 5 students through CSIRO’s STEM Professionals in Schools Program.

At the Beaker Street Festival in Hobart (August 2023), I worked as a roving scientist, facilitating microscope exploration of plant structures with festivalgoers of all ages.

Through Skype a Scientist (2020-2025), I’ve connected with classrooms internationally, conducting Q&A sessions with students in India, Hong Kong, the UK, and Pakistan.

Panel Discussions & Interviews

I’ve participated in several panel discussions addressing career pathways and broader societal issues. These include the International Universities Climate Alliance industry panel (May 2022), discussing climate change impacts on biodiversity with the financial services sector; an International Women’s Day panel at Prairiewood High School (March 2021), challenging gender inequality; and an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion panel for the SciX Program at UNSW (May 2023).

I’ve also been a guest on student-led initiatives, including a podcast with South Sydney High School (May 2020) and a video interview series, Spotlight on UNSW (August 2021), discussing pathways into science.
